Sandia's Foals, continued ...

Once again, Debbie Romero came to the rescue. One day Lightfoot leaned his 600 pounds against her 110. She grabbed his head and twisted, flipping him, blam on his side. He never leaned on any human again.

Lightfoot and Vashti did wonders for the morale of the Border Collies. Jo Kid and Choplicker were brilliant at herding goat, and that is about the hardest thing a Border Collie can do. By the time we got the foals, they still ahdn't figured out how to make Coquettta move where they wanted her to go. The foals, however, soon figured out that resistance was futile and began obeying them. The Collies' success with the foals encouraged them to keep trying with Coquetta. After another five months of effort, the Collies finally figured out how to herd her. Or maybe Coquetta finally decided to humor them.

What about Lightfoot and Vashti's crooked legs? Our farrier told us this was mostly the fault of a life confined to small corrals. Sure enough, with room to run and Johnson's expert hoof trimming, their legs straightened.

Jo Kid is giving Lightfoot the Border Collie stare while Choplicker runs to gather Vashti.

Meanwhile, with two foals to love and discipline, Coquetta no longer hung out in the southeast corner of the pasture crying to Arlene's horses. When I rode her she was just as happy to return as to leave.
